FDOT District 1 Seeks Modeling Coordinator Applicants

Modeling Coordinator Position in FDOT District 1

Salary:  $54,567.11 - $70,732.73

FDOT is seeking experienced professional in traffic modeling to oversee the District One Regional Planning Model (D1RMP). Experience in traffic modeling softwares PTV Visum, TransCAD, or CUBE Voyager is preferred. This Modeling Coordinator position reports to the Systems Planning Administrator and includes the following duties:

Oversees development, updates, and maintenance of the D1RPM.

Coordination with metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), transportation planning organizations (TPOs), county governments, and local governments to keep them informed on the status of the D1RPM as well as any updates that will be included in future version of the D1RPM. This position will also assist these entities with running the D1RPM and how to work with the D1RPM.

Oversee development of separate mesoscopic and microscopic models based on the D1RPM to be used in project traffic reports.

Review and approve Equivalent Single Axle Loading (ESAL) reports.

Review developer traffic impact analysis reports and coordinate with counties on new developments for inclusion in the D1RPM.

Coordinate various traffic modeling tasks for FDOT District One.

Represent FDOT District One at the annual Florida Model Task Force meeting.

FSUTMS models to be converted to new platform

The Florida regional and statewide travel models will be transitioning to new modeling platforms with the anticipated model conversion completion date of July 2023. The two software platforms available for this transition are PTV Visum and TransCAD. 

FDOT Districts and their metropolitan planning organization partners will work collaboratively to choose a software platform and develop a schedule for model conversions. This schedule is expected to follow the long-range transportation plan update schedule shown below.

New Training Course: Data Mining for Transportation Modeling

This online training is an introductory course on the various public data sets used for travel demand modeling, including data for both passenger and freight modeling. Data sets to be covered will be from sources such as the Census Bureau, FHWA, Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as Florida-specific data sources that are useful for model estimation, calibration, and validation. The full training course contains six 1.5-hour increments to be held online on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings during two consecutive weeks in June. Back by Popular Demand: Introductory-level Python Training

This course provides a basic introduction on the use of Python for transportation planning and modeling. It includes a brief introduction to the fundamentals of writing code in Python, as well as modules on tabular data analysis, visualizations, geographic analysis, and discrete choice modeling. The course assumes that students are already somewhat familiar with the methodologies and mathematical tools of transportation modeling in general, and focuses exclusively on the how these tools and models are constructed and used within Python.

The training will be held online Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9AM to 10:30AM eastern time, starting May 4th, running 6 weeks, skipping the Thursday before and the Tuesday after Memorial Day, and ending on June 10th. To register, email Terry Corkery: terrence.corkery@dot.state.fl.us

PTV America is offering a series of free one-hour webinars to the Florida transportation modeling community, providing an opportunity to become familiar with PTV Visum software.

The ten episodes of “Getting to Know PTV Visum” web-training series will consist of presentations and step-by-step demonstrations covering a wide range of topics.
