Modeling Training and Registration
FSUTMS modeling training workshops are offered FREE OF CHARGE by FDOT to the Florida transportation modeling community to maintain quality assurance for consistent statewide modeling standards and to provide up-to-date information on recent model enhancements. All our live workshops focus exclusively on the new FSUTMS powered by Cube Voyager. A desktop computer-based training (CBT) program for the Tranplan version of FSUTMS is available for download here.

Training workshops qualify for professional development hour (PDH) credit for Florida professional engineers. The number of PDH credits for each workshop is equal to the number of classroom hours. If you would like to obtain PDH credits, please provide your PE registration number to the Systems Planning Office prior to the workshop. (FDOT's PDH provider number is 75.)

We will begin offering the FY08-09 training workshops in August or September 2008. We will alert the newsletter mailing list when the new schedule is released and registration is open. (Sign up for the modeling newsletter on the fsutmsonline home page -- box in left margin.) The new schedule will be similar to last year's, shown below.

Detailed Workshop Descriptions

The FSUTMS Comprehensive Modeling Workshop will provide an overview of the transportation planning process, travel demand forecasting methodologies, and FSUTMS modules and data requirements. Participants will learn to install and execute FSUTMS powered by Cube, use the menu systems, interpret and create standard output results, and create and edit networks through a series of hands-on computer exercises. Previous Geographic Information System (GIS) experience is helpful for this workshop, but not required. There will be three workshops lasting four days each (see workshop agenda).

The FSUTMS Executive Summary Modeling Seminar will provide an overview of the transportation planning process, travel demand forecasting methodologies, and FSUTMS modules under Cube. Participants will learn the underlying theories of modeling and see the benefits of Cube's abilities to produce presentation graphics for reports and meetings. This workshop will be designed for managers and non-modelers. There will be one workshop and it will last one day (see workshop agenda).

The FSUTMS Model Calibration Workshop will provide the participants technical details on the FSUTMS process and is designed for transportation professionals who have a basic understanding of the travel demand forecasting process. The workshop contains lectures on travel survey techniques, how to create FSUTMS input files from origin and destination survey data, how to create and interpret trip tables, usage of friction factors and K-factors, calibration/validation techniques, and criteria, procedures, and accepted standards in Florida. There will be one workshop and it will last three days (see workshop agenda).

The Advanced FSUTMS-Cube & Scripting Workshop is designed for the FSUTMS/Tranplan modeler transitioning to FSUTMS/Cube-Voyager, as well as who requires an overview on interpreting and creating Cube scripts under the Florida standards. The first part of the workshop will cover procedures done differently in FSUTMS/Cube-Voyager and the second part of the workshop will cover Cube scripting language elements, resources, and data manipulation. Detailed descriptions of the standard FSUTMS menu interface scripts will be discussed. A guest modeler with extensive Cube script writing experience will be invited to help prepare and teach this workshop. It is recommended that the FSUTMS Comprehensive Modeling Workshop serve as a prerequisite to this workshop or extensive experience in FSUTMS/Tranplan. There will be two workshops lasting three days.(see workshop agenda)

The FSUTMS Transit Modeling Workshop is a three-day training course designed as a beginning- to intermediate-level workshop for professionals with highway modeling experience but little experience in transit. The course will cover in detail transit modeling within FSUTMS-Cube, including transit network coding, micro-coding fixed guideway stations, creating transit input files, transit access and path-building, Public Transport (PT) module scripting, mode choice, transit assignment, interpreting and displaying transit ridership results, and User Benefits. (see workshop agenda)

The FHWA Mining for Data Workshop provides a one-and-a-half-day hands-on training using data from the Census Transportation Planning Products (CTPP) program, the American Community Survey (ACS), and the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). Course topics include analyzing, toubleshooting, and presenting CTPP data; working with statistical margins of error; and downloading information from the online tools American Fact Finder, CTPP Access Tool, and NHTS Online.(detailed description)

Introduction to ArcGIS Using FSUTMS/Cube will teach the fully integrated ArcGIS graphical interface of Cube 5.0, scheduled for release in October 2007. This new version of Cube combines the usefulness of Cube/Viper's transportation model display tools with the world standard in GIS software, ArcGIS. It is recommended that the FSUTMS Comprehensive Modeling Workshop serve as a prerequisite to this workshop. This workshop will be developed after the release of Cube 5 embedded with ArcGIS.
