Decisions about spending public funds for transportation improvements often are informed by estimates and forecasts developed through mathematical models. The more closely these models represent reality and include important influencing factors, the more confidence we can have in spending decisions. Models that can provide a better basis for predicting how highway improvements affect congestion, for example, or that reflect the differences in forecasting freight demand and passenger transportation will provide a more reliable picture of future needs. The project brief describes five projects from the SHRP 2 Capacity and Reliability focus areas that are working to improve existing planning models, operations models, and activity-based models.

The NCHRP 08-36, Task 098 report on Improving Employment Data for Transportation Planning has been released. This guidebook investigates three alternative publicly available sources of employment data that may be useful for transportation planning and travel behavior research applications. The sources explored in the report are the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and two databases produced from the Census Bureau's Longitudinal Employment Household Dynamics Program - the Quarterly Workforce Indicators and OnTheMap.

Will you be responsible for creating the TAZs and/or the "new" Traffic Analysis Districts for the 5-year CTPP data in your district or MPO? Will you need to know the process or be managing a TAZ/TAD delineation effort? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you will certainly want to register and attend one of two repeat webinars that will be held at the end of February by FHWA.
FHWA is providing two webinars that will feature a discussion of the Census Data TAZs/TADs, the delineation rules and time line. There will also be a demonstration by Census Bureau staff of the delineation software that MPOs and States will be using coupled with ample time for Q&A. Registration is mandatory and make sure to include the entire link when going to the registration website.
If you are having troubling registering you can email either Elaine Murakami (Elaine.Murakami@dot.gov) or Ed Christopher (Ed.Christopher@dot.gov) and they will try to help.

Thursday, September 30, 2010 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM EDT In preparation for the release of Cube 5.1.2 Citilabs will provide a webinar to train users regarding the new traffic assignment techniques included in Cube 5.1.2. The enhancements will be delivered as a part of the Cube Voyager software already licensed and maintained by the Florida DOT and should provide significant run-time benefits to models which incorporate feedback loops. Examples of Florida travel demand models that have been tested will be provided.
