DOT & HUD Team Up for Coordinated Housing and Transportation Planning

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan have announced a groundbreaking collaborative effort designed to help foster planning for more livable, sustainable communities - places where transportation, housing and commercial development investments are coordinated to better serve the people living in those communities.

Together, the U.S. Departments of Transportation (DOT) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD), for the first time ever, will join forces to award up to $75 million in funding - $35 million in TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) II Planning Grants and $40 million in Sustainable Community Challenge Grants for localized planning activities that ultimately lead to projects that integrate transportation, housing and economic development.

This joint Notice of Funding Availability means projects that apply for funding will be evaluated by a dual-agency process. Rather than have applicants proceed through two separate grant application procedures that might be on different timelines with different requirements, we're streamlining to create one point of entry.

Federal Transit Administration’s Request for Public Comment

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) published the Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) in the Federal Register on Thursday, June 3, 2010. The agency seeks public comment on how to best rate and evaluate significant transit infrastructure projects that are seeking federal funding. The agency is looking for ways to measure cost-effectiveness, economic development, land use and environmental impacts in the evaluation process. This process will lead to improved changes in the way major transit project proposals are selected to receive federal assistance in FTA's New Starts and Small Starts programs.

On behalf of the MTF we encourage you to participate in this public input process. If you would like to also share your comments with Central Office please send them to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Where are we with Urbanized Areas Webinar - FHWA

On Friday June 11, 2010 Federal Highway Administration in coordination with the Census Transportation Planning Products program will host a two hour webinar on the Census Bureau's plans for defining new Urban Areas.

These areas are important for transportation planning because of requirements for establishing MPOs and revisions to MPO boundaries, TMA designations, and roadway functional classification. This webinar is a follow on for those who could not attend a similar workshop held at the GIS-T Conference in West Virginia. In addition to discussing Urban Area boundary development, Census Bureau staff will discuss several other geographic related products and programs. Every 10 years following the decennial census the Census Bureau redefines Urban Areas. Urban Areas include both Urbanized Areas and Urban Clusters.

This webinar will begin promptly at 1:00 PM (Eastern) and run for 2 hours. It will include presentations along with time for question and answers. Topics covered will include:

  • A Brief Transportation Perspective on Census Geography, Ed Christopher (FHWA)
  • Discussion of the Proposed Urbanized Area Criteria, Mike Ratcliffe, Census Bureau Geography
  • Review of Census Geographic Area Programs and Products, Mike Ratcliffe, Census Bureau

Space is limited and advanced preregistration is necessary. If you are unsure that you will attend please do not register. If more than one person from a site can share one computer connection that will help make space for others. The webinar will be recorded for those who miss it.

To register please visit the following link and complete the form.

Panhandle Transportation Applications and FSUTMS Users’

The Panhandle Transportation Applications and FSUTMS Users' Group resides in the Panhandle of Northwest Florida. We represent sixteen counties, four MPO/TPO Urban areas, and two Planning Councils. Due to the location and distance of the members, we would like to begin scheduling meetings quarterly using the "GotoMeeting" software. We would like to schedule these meetings during and around the lunch hour beginning at 12:30 p.m. EDT and lasting approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Conducting the meetings during this time via the phone should allow more users to participate and network with others in our District. If you would like to participate, please contact Linda Little by email: linda.little@dot.state.fl.us. We look forward to hearing from you.
