STOPS Workshop for Transit Agencies and Users

The Simplified Trips on Project Software (abbreviated as STOPS) is being utilized as the ridership forecasting tool in multiple transit studies throughout the state. The Florida Department of Transportation’s Transit Office is offering free workshops to train transit planning managers, directors, STOPS reviewers and appliers. Each workshop will be broken into two parts:

  • The morning session is intended for transit planning managers and directors. It will cover the basics of STOPS software, give an overview of the Capital Investment Grant (CIG) program, and discuss example applications of STOPS.
  • The afternoon session is designed for STOPS model developers and appliers. It will cover the steps for developing and maintaining a STOPS model, as well as analyzing and presenting results from STOPS. Three one-day workshops will be held – two in-person and one virtual. The same content will be covered in each of the three workshops.

----------

Registration is free and open to all agencies and their consultants. Be sure to register for one of the following webinars!

  • Workshop #1 (Ft. Lauderdale, in-person), Tuesday, April 18, 2023, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm, click here to register.
  • Workshop #2 (Tampa, in-person), Monday, April 24, 2023, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm, click here to register.
  • Workshop #3 (Virtual), Thursday, May 11, 2023, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm, click here to register.

----------

What is STOPS?

The 2013 Final Rule on major capital investment projects revised the measures that FTA uses to evaluate, and rate proposed major transit projects. STOPS is a ridership forecasting tool widely used by sponsors of New Starts and Small Starts projects to evaluate the measures used by FTA to rate projects and is used by transit and other public agencies throughout Florida. STOPS has evolved since its release in 2013 and is now applied to support a wider range of planning applications – such as systems planning, operations planning, and QA/QC of forecasts from local travel demand models.

The training is eligible for 7.5 AICP CM credit hours.

FSUTMS NextGen Working Group

The February 2022 Model Task Force (MTF) meeting introduced a progressive and extensive update to the Florida Standard Urban Transportation Modeling Structure. As part of this effort, a working group made up of a broad spectrum of MTF members is proposed to provide direction, research, and review of existing and new modeling guidelines. We  request that all of those wishing to participate in the FSUTMS Next Gen Working Group complete and submit a form indicating their interest. Working group members will be selected from among those who have submitted this form. Even if you have previously expressed interest in participating, we ask that you submit the form located at [CLOSED JULY 1].

Modeling Training Courses Open for Registration

In-Person Modeling Training Courses Open for Registration

FSUTMS Executive Summary Modeling Seminar - Tuesday, May 31
FSUTMS Modeling Disruptive Technologies Seminar - Wednesday, June 1

Data Mining for Travel Model Development - Monday, June 20

Online/Virtual Training Course Open for Registration:
Python Programming for Transportation Modeling - June 6-17, 2022, 9:00-10:30 AM EDT every weekday morning for two weeks on Microsoft Teams.

In-Person Training Schedule:
Tuesday after Memorial Day, May 31, 2022, Florida's Turnpike HQ, Ocoee, FL
The FSUTMS Executive Summary Modeling Seminar provides an overview of the transportation planning process, travel demand forecasting methodologies, and FSUTMS modules. Participants learn the underlying theories of modeling and see how to produce presentation graphics for reports and meetings. This single-day workshop is designed for managers and other non-modelers who review model outputs.

Wednesday, June 1, 2022, Florida's Turnpike HQ, Ocoee, FL
The FSUTMS Modeling Disruptive Technologies Seminar provides an understanding of various factors related to “disruptive technologies” that are transforming how people and goods travel and need to be considered in planning.  These include connected/autonomous vehicles, Transportation Network Companies, shared micro-mobility, working from home (including hybrid approaches), and e-commerce. Participants will learn how these issues can be considered in FSUTMS travel models and provide an understanding of the assumptions made about disruptive technologies when modeling them and the impacts of these assumptions.

Monday, June 20, 2022, FDOT District 7 HQ, Tampa, FL
The Data Mining for Travel Model Development course will serve as an introductory course to the various public data sets used for travel demand modeling. These include data for both passenger and freight modeling. Data sets that will be covered will be from sources such as the Census Bureau, FHWA, Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as Florida specific data sources that are useful for model estimation, calibration, and validation.

Online/Virtual Training
In addition to the in-person courses above, we will be offering a live instructor-led online/virtual workshop June 6-17, 9:00 to 10:30 every weekday morning for two weeks:

Python for Transportation Modeling
This course provides a basic introduction on the use of Python for transportation planning and modeling. It includes a brief introduction to the fundamentals of writing code in Python, as well as modules on tabular data analysis, visualizations, geographic analysis, and discrete choice modeling. The course assumes that students are already somewhat familiar with the methodologies and mathematical tools of transportation modeling in general, and focuses exclusively on the how these tools and models are constructed and used within Python.

All workshops are free of charge. Registration required.
